Chenin Blanc
AOC Vouvray
I am pretty excited as this week I will be in the Loire for a few days as we put together some videos for the blog. We are going to pay a visit to the town of Vouvray and I am really looking forward to it. I have been to the Loire before, but it is a region I don’t think I could ever tire of visiting – the history, the wines and the goat cheese – three things I love dearly!
While the wines of Vouvray compliment the cuisine of the Loire, I have found that Chenin Blanc, the grape that is used in Vouvray, is also versatile enough to pair with some of the dishes we are so fond of serving in the US. It is a great match with bbq chicken and baked ham and it is an excellent wine to serve alongside meals that have an Indian or Thai influence.
Typically made in an off-dry style, that is with discernible residual sugar, Chenin Blanc has such high acidity that it rarely comes across as too sweet. This wine, the B&G Vouvray, is a nice example. It does have some sweetness to it, but with its crisp acidity, it is refreshing rather than cloying, which makes it an ideal wine to serve with summertime meals.

I stumbled over Vouvray several years ago, the Michel Picard label–2006. It was very reasonably priced, and I bought lots of it–especially good in the Kansas heat and humidity. Good body, nice aromas, somewhat fruity but not sweet. Then my favorite liquor store ran out of it, and I bought the B&G–another great find! Much smoother, more polished, but still Vouvray. Such a nice wine–I am now trying different labels that I can afford and comparing them.

Discovered this wine at my favorite Thai restaurant. Fell in love and have shared it with many friends who also love it.
