2009 Georges Duboeuf Beaujolais-Villages

Jul 19, 2010

AOC Beaujolais- Villages

All too often the wines of the Beaujolais region are dismissed for not being “serious wines.” On many occasions I wonder what that really means – and why the idea of not being serious is considered such a put-down. Of course maybe that’s just me. After all, I love reading great literature, but I am a long-standing (and proud) People Magazine subscriber. Sometimes my brain just likes a bit of a break. And I find that my palate does too – just as it likes deep, rich dark chocolate, it also will occasionally exhibit a craving for peanut M&Ms. But getting back to the issue of Beaujolais, one of the things that is so fantastic about the wines of this region is that there is room for both sides here. While we do have the light, fruity wines of Beaujolais Nouveau (the first wine of the harvest that is released on the 3rd Thursday in November), there are also the more weighty (and “serious”) wines of Beaujolais-Villages and the 10 crus (best villages) of Beaujolais.

And this Beaujolais-Villages from Georges Duboeuf actually offers us a great middle ground. Made from the Gamay grape, the wine is from the fantastic 2009 vintage and it has delicious flavors of ripe strawberries as well as a nice structure and sense of balance. This wine would be a terrific choice for a cookout or dinner of grilled sausages and/or vegetables. It would also be perfect for pizza night… and you could pair it with either a serious dramatic film or your favorite romantic comedy.
