AOC Marsannay Rosé
This week’s Wine of the Week is a beautiful gem of a rosé wine from the village of Marsannay in Burgundy. Marsannay, the northernmost AOC in the Côte de Nuits, is unusual in that it produces whites, reds and rosés. Interestingly, the majority of rosé that is produced in Burgundy is sold as generic Bourgogne. But in Marsannay, the wines are entitled to their own AOC status. According to the Oxford Companion to Wine, Marsannay rosé is “a speciality of the village pioneered in 1919 by Joseph Clair and taken up by the local co-operative. Leading producers are Audoin, Charlopin, and Bruno Clair.” p>
Although most people associate rosé wines with Spring or Summer, this is a wine that shouldn’t just be confined to being drunk in the warmer months. It has a great deal of complexity and would pair well with a variety of meals – regardless of the season. Taking that into consideration, I’ve decided to think about a pairing that would be popular any time of the year. Lately, we have been making more of an effort to eat fish and so I think that this week I am going to try my hand at making a salmon dish (keep your fingers crossed for me!) to pair with the Charles Audoin. I’m still looking for the perfect (and easy) recipe, so if you have any suggestions for me, please drop me a line! p>
