2007 Chateau Coucheroy

Aug 30, 2010

AOC Pessac-Léognan
Sauvignon Blanc

The Chateau Coucheroy is made from 100% Sauvignon Blanc grapes that are grown on a gravel and chalk outcropping in the appellation of Pessac-Léognan in Bordeaux. The wine is fresh and lively, but with a slight roundness as it was aged partly in barrels and partly in tanks. This combination creates not only a lovely sense of balance in the wine, but also allows the expression of both the Sauvignon Blanc fruit (gooseberries, citrus fruit) and some vanilla and toast notes from the oak contact.

I always get a chuckle when I tell the story about how the estate supposedly got its name. The local legend says that Henri, then King of neighboring Navarre and the future King of France, was surprised by a sudden violent thunderstorm while out hunting and, not wanting to get wet, decided to take shelter at the chateau overnight. Since that night, the chateau has been called Coucheroy, which essentially means that “the King slept here.
